The game of Stoppers and Intruders : Revisiting Chhur

Back in Assam, when I was small, we used to dig up markers on playgrounds, paddy fields and even on kachha roads. Sometimes we played during the day. Most of the time, it was an evening game. In the summer, we would play even after dusk. Elders would play spectators and judge if there were any dispute.

Chasing the Signal: A Life Spent Running Towards the TV

An antenna was tied as high as possible on a bamboo post to catch a better signal. When it rained or wind blew strong the antenna would get twisted and turn its face like an angry kid. Someone would have to rotate the pole to fix the antenna in a right position to effectively catch the signal, while people inside would give directions if the signal is getting better or worse. “Aaya, aaya…chala gaya….aaya, aaya…phir chala gaya…”
